Commercial Driver's License
The Healthy Families Father Support Team has created a public/private venture with Reece Albert, Inc. that enables fathers to earn Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs) plus have guaranteed jobs starting at a premium wage. Before this program existed, CDLs were only available through an academy over 150 miles away that costs $5,000.00 and requires students to live in dorms for the four months of classes--an impractical arrangement for dads in San Angelo.
Under this new program, Healthy Families San Angelo agrees to help dads pass the written part of the CDL test by providing textbooks, a place to study, and encouragement. After they pass the written exam, Reece Albert helps them with the driving part of the test and assures them a job starting at $10.00/hr. The typical starting salary for a driver in this area is $7.25/hr. Dads are also helped in getting their license, work boots, and uniforms.

Workforce Investment Act Program
A goal for all HFSA projects is to decrease family stress by improving education and employability. Since 2002 Healthy Families has collaborated with the Workforce Investment Act Youth Program (WIAYP). Project parents between the ages of 14 and 22 have had the opportunity to attain basic skills, occupational skills training, and self-sustaining employment. Parents who participate in the program receive services including academics, paid and unpaid work experiences, occupational and vocational skills training, leadership development opportunities, and comprehensive guidance and counseling.
Thanks to a contract with the Texas Workforce WIA Youth Program, HFSA offers our parents the opportunity to become Certified Nurse Assistants. HFSA pays for parents' registration, supplies, uniforms, and books. Many Healthy Families moms and dads have become CNAs and have gone on to careers in the medical field.

Moms' Group
Every three months the moms in the Healthy Families San Angelo program meet in our building to have fun and discuss topics such as child development, job search, legal issues, and child health and wellness. Moms with older children help newer moms with advice and understanding. In addition to frequent guest speakers, the moms are also offered craft activities, which encourage conversation and the building of friendships.
